A plate heat exchanger is a highly efficient heat exchanger that consists of a series of metal plates stacked together, with each plate having a specific corrugated shape. These plates create thin rectangular channels, facilitating heat exchange between fluids. Plate heat exchangers are particularly well-suited for liquid-to-liquid and liquid-to-vapor heat exchange processes.

Plate heat exchangers offer several advantages, including high heat transfer efficiency, minimal thermal losses, compact and lightweight construction, small footprint, wide applicability, and long service life. Compared to traditional tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers can achieve a heat transfer coefficient 3-5 times higher and occupy only about one-third of the space. Additionally, they can achieve heat recovery rates of over 90%.

According to the structure, plate heat exchangers can be classified into four main types:
- Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers: Also known as removable plate heat exchangers, these types of exchangers consist of a series of removable metal plates sealed with gaskets. They are suitable for smaller flow rates and applications with significant temperature variations.
- Welded Plate Heat Exchangers: In this type of heat exchanger, the metal plates are directly welded together, forming a tight heat transfer surface. They are suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
- Spiral Plate Heat Exchangers: These heat exchangers utilize a pair of spiral-shaped metal plates to create multiple channels for fluid separation and heat transfer.
- Plate and Frame Heat Exchangers: Also known as honeycomb heat exchangers, they consist of a series of corrugated metal plates stacked together and enclosed within a frame. The fluid flows through alternating channels between the plates, allowing for efficient heat transfer.

- Solar Energy Utilization: Plate heat exchangers are involved in the heat exchange process of heat transfer fluids, such as ethylene glycol, in solar collectors to harness solar energy.
- Chemical Industry: Plate heat exchangers are used in the manufacturing of titanium dioxide, alcohol fermentation, ammonia synthesis, resin synthesis, rubber production, cooling of phosphoric acid, cooling of formaldehyde water, alkali and carbon industries, and electrolytic alkali production.

- Textile Industry: Plate heat exchangers are used for heat recovery in various waste liquids, cooling of boiling phosphoric fibers, cooling of adhesive solutions, cooling of acetic acid and acetic anhydride, cooling of alkaline water solutions, and heating and cooling of viscose fibers.
- Paper Industry: Plate heat exchangers are employed for cooling black liquor, heating and cooling of bleaching salts and alkali solutions, heat recovery from waste solutions in glass paper production, heating of cooking acids, cooling of sodium hydroxide solutions, waste solution recovery from bleaching paper, condensation of exhaust gases, and preheating of concentrated pulp-like waste liquids.
- District Heating: Plate heat exchangers are used for heating in waste heat areas of power plants and for heating domestic hot water in boiler areas.
- Oil and Fat Industry: Plate heat exchangers are used for heating and cooling synthetic detergents, heating whale oil, cooling vegetable oils, cooling sodium hydroxide, and cooling glycerol and emulsified oils.
- Power Industry: Plate heat exchangers are used for cooling generator shaft pumps and transformer oil.
- Marine Applications: Plate heat exchangers are used in marine vessels for cooling diesel engines, central coolers, jacket water coolers, piston coolers, lubricating oil coolers, preheaters, and seawater desalination systems (including multi-stage and single-stage systems).
- Seawater Aquaculture: Plate heat exchangers are utilized for heating seawater in hatcheries, reducing the use of coal, thereby improving energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.
- Other Applications: Plate heat exchangers are also used in the pharmaceutical, petroleum, ceramic, glass, cement, and geothermal industries.
