Electrocoagulation System Overview
The Electrocoagulation (EC) system is an advanced wastewater treatment process that utilizes metal hydroxide produced by soluble metal anodes during flocculation to effectively remove contaminants from water. The system typically employs aluminum, iron, and other readily available, cost-effective metals as anode materials.
System Working Principle
The electrocoagulation process involves three key electrochemical reactions:
- Electrochemical reaction: Fe → Fe²⁺ + 2e⁻
- Anodizing reaction: 2OH⁻ → 2[O] + 2e⁻ → O₂ + 2e⁻ (nascent oxygen [O] provides strong oxidation comparable to UV, H₂O₂, and O₃)
- Cathode reduction: 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ → 2[H] → H₂ (nascent hydrogen breaks chemical bonds, COD, chromophore functional groups, and multi-chain compounds)
These oxidation and reduction reactions occur continuously on the electrode plates.
