The electrocoagulation system is an advanced wastewater treatment process that utilizes metal hydroxide produced by soluble metal anodes during flocculation to effectively remove contaminants from water. The system employs readily available and cost-effective anode materials such as aluminum and iron.
System Working Principle
The system operates through electrochemical reactions:
- Electrochemical reaction: Fe→Fe²⁺+2e
- Anodizing reaction: 2OH⁻→2[O]+2e→O₂+2e (nascent oxygen [O] provides strong oxidation)
- Cathode reduction: 2H⁺+2e→2[H]→H₂ (nascent hydrogen breaks chemical bonds)
These oxidation and reduction functions continuously occur on the plates, providing efficient wastewater treatment.
