Greaseproof paper is a type of paper that is impermeable to oil or grease and is often used in cooking or food packaging. It is usually produced by refining base paper, resulting in a paper with very low porosity. The density is then further increased by hard calendering rolls (supercalendering), resulting in a paper called cellophane. Cellophane is treated in a pulp press with starch, alginate or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to fill the pores, or the paper is chemically treated to make it resistant to oil. Basis weight is generally 30 - 90g/m2.
