Image formation is instantaneous upon heating, making it suitable for high-speed printing applications (such as receipts and labels).

Coating Type Determines Performance

Two-component coating (common): Develops color upon heating, but is susceptible to fading (suitable for short-term receipts).

Thermal Transfer Coating: More durable, requires use with ribbon (such as logistics labels).

Conformal Coating: Water-, oil-, and alcohol-resistant (for labels in special environments).

Short Shelf Life
Ordinary thermal paper easily fades under the influence of light, heat, or chemicals (typically within a few months to two years). Long-term archiving requires a long-lasting coating or laminate.

Environmental Controversy
Some contain developers such as bisphenol A, which may be harmful to the human body. Phenol-free alternatives (such as bisphenol S or developers) are currently available.
