Carbonless Paper: Working Principle and Applications
Working Principle:
Carbonless paper (also called NCR paper, from No Carbon Required) enables duplicate writing or printing without using traditional carbon sheets. It relies on chemically coated layers that react under pressure to produce copies.
Multi-part Structure: Typically consists of two or more sheets:
CB (Coated Back) Sheet: The top sheet, coated with micro-encapsulated dye on the back.
CF (Coated Front) Sheet: The bottom sheet, coated with a reactive clay or polymer that develops color when exposed to the dye.
CFB (Coated Front & Back) Sheet: Middle sheets (if used) have both coatings to transfer impressions to subsequent layers.
How It Works: When pressure is applied (e.g., writing or printing), the microcapsules on the CB sheet rupture, releasing dye that reacts with the CF sheet’s coating, creating a visible mark.
