Product Description

A Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is a dental appliance used to widen the upper jaw (maxilla) in order to create more space and correct certain bite issues. It is commonly used in orthodontic treatment, especially in cases where there is a narrow upper jaw or a crossbite.

Here's how a Rapid Palatal Expander works and the process involved:

  1. Evaluation and planning: The orthodontist or dentist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include dental impressions, X-rays, and photographs, to assess the patient's bite and jaw alignment. Based on the evaluation, they will determine if a Rapid Palatal Expander is necessary and appropriate.

  2. Placement of the expander: The Rapid Palatal Expander is custom-made to fit the patient's mouth. It consists of two halves connected by a screw mechanism in the middle. The appliance is cemented or bonded to the back teeth (usually the premolars or molars) on both sides of the upper jaw.

  3. Activation of the expander: Once the expander is in place, the screw mechanism is activated. The patient or their parent/guardian is instructed on how to turn a key or knob at regular intervals, typically once or twice a day. The activation process gradually widens the expander, creating tension on the palatal bones and causing them to move apart.

  4. Adjustment and monitoring: The orthodontist or dentist will schedule regular appointments to monitor the progress and make necessary adjustments to the expander. These adjustments ensure that the expansion is gradual and controlled, avoiding any discomfort or potential issues.

  5. Retention phase: After the desired expansion is achieved, the Rapid Palatal Expander is typically left in place for a period of time to allow the new bone to form and stabilize. This helps to maintain the expanded width of the upper jaw. Depending on the individual case, a removable retainer or other orthodontic appliances may be used to maintain the results.
