How does a cleanroom work?
A cleanroom provides an isolated environment for handling contamination-sensitive materials. modular cleanrooms use filter/fan units (FFUs) to feed HEPA- or ULPA-filtered air into the cleanroom, creating a “sweeping” action to carry airborne particulates out through exhaust vents (wall- or floor-mounted). This is what’s typically referred to as a positive-pressure cleanroom.
A negative-pressure cleanroom ensures a clean processing environment while simultaneously protecting the external environment from hazards within the cleanroom. These types of cleanrooms are connected to an in-house ducting system that releases the cleanroom’s exhaust air outside of the building, typically after passing through some sort of decontamination filter (carbon and/or HEPA). A separate exhaust fan must be incorporated to draw sufficient airflow out of the cleanroom, generally 30% more air than that supplied by the cleanroom FFUs.


A positive-pressure cleanroom comes in two varieties: using single-pass or recirculated air. Single-pass airflow exits through exhaust vents and is replaced by fresh make-up air from the FFUs. By contrast, a recirculating airflow design uses air return ducting to direct exhausted air back through the ceiling HEPA or ULPA filters, preserving critical environmental conditions within the cleanroom such as temperature and humidity. Recirculation also reduces particle loads on filters, extending their service life, and prevents outside fumes from creeping into the airstream.
