LT-MZ1222 Automatic Column & Boom Welding Manipulator | Complete Structure Overview for Tank, Vessel & Pipe Welding Workstation
The LT-MZ1222 column and boom welding manipulator is an integrated automatic welding workstation purpose-built for heavy-duty cylindrical workpiece fabrication, including pressure vessel shells, storage tank courses, large-diameter pipes, and pipe spools. This machine performs both longitudinal straight seam welding and circumferential girth seam welding.
The structure overview clearly shows all core assemblies: column, control cabinet, travel carriage, boom, welding head, and flux hopper. Each component works in synergy to deliver stable, repeatable, and high-quality automated welding. When matched with welding turning rolls, the system forms a complete welding cell that eliminates the inconsistency of manual welding, improves weld qualification rates, and boosts production capacity for metal fabrication workshops.
Compatible with submerged arc welding (SAW), MIG, MAG, and CO₂ gas shielded welding processes, this manipulator handles carbon steel, stainless steel, and low alloy steel. It is widely adopted in pressure vessel plants, tank manufacturing yards, pipe prefabrication workshops, and heavy steel structure factories.
-
Column
The vertical main column is constructed from thick steel plate with full welding and stress relief treatment. It provides rigid vertical support for the travel carriage and boom assembly. Precision guide rails are mounted on the column, enabling smooth vertical lifting movement while resisting vibration and deflection during long-hour welding operations. -
Control Cabinet
The electrical control cabinet is equipped with an industrial PLC and touch screen HMI. Operators can set travel speed, lifting parameters, store welding recipes, and control all machine motions from here. It integrates motion control, safety interlock, and parameter management functions for convenient operation. -
Travel Carriage
The travel carriage runs vertically along the column guide rails, driven by a motor and gear rack system. It carries the entire boom assembly up and down to adjust the working height of the welding head to match different workpiece sizes. -
Boom
The telescopic horizontal boom adopts a closed rectangular anti-torsion beam structure. It can extend and retract horizontally at adjustable constant speed. For longitudinal seam welding, the boom travels along the full length of the weld seam; for circumferential welding, the boom locks position and holds the welding head steady. -
Welding Head
The welding head is fitted with an X/Y/Z three-axis torch fine adjustment mechanism. It allows precise manual alignment of the welding torch to the weld groove, compensating for assembly gaps and misalignment. It supports multi-layer and multi-pass welding for thick plates. -
Flux Hopper
Specially configured for submerged arc welding. The flux hopper stores and automatically delivers welding flux during SAW operation, ensuring continuous flux coverage over the weld pool, protecting molten metal, and producing high-quality submerged arc welds.
This welding system supports two primary welding modes:
- Longitudinal seam welding: The cylindrical workpiece stays fixed on turning rolls. The boom drives the welding head to move linearly at constant speed along the straight seam to complete full-length longitudinal welding.
- Circumferential girth welding: The workpiece rotates steadily on welding turning rolls, while the boom and welding head remain stationary. The relative rotation creates continuous circumferential welds for pipe spools and vessel ring seams.
All movement speed and welding parameters are digitally controlled, ensuring consistent heat input and uniform weld formation in batch production.

All core assemblies are well-matched and rigidly built. The stress-relieved column and boom minimize vibration during movement, keeping the welding head in a stable position to guarantee consistent weld quality.
One machine handles both longitudinal and circumferential welds. Fabricators can use the same equipment to produce tank shell courses, pressure vessel barrels, and pipe spools, maximizing equipment utilization and cutting capital investment.
The PLC touch screen control cabinet allows operators to save multiple welding recipes. Switching between different workpiece specifications is fast, reducing machine setup time and improving workshop throughput.
Equipped with a flux hopper ready for submerged arc welding. Submerged arc welds feature deep penetration, smooth bead surface, and high mechanical performance, ideal for heavy pressure vessel and tank fabrication.
Works with most mainstream welding power sources and welding turning rolls on the market. It can be deployed as a standalone workstation or integrated into automated production lines for cylindrical product manufacturing.
Automated welding reduces reliance on highly skilled welders. Stable welding performance lowers defect rates, cutting rework, grinding, and scrap costs for your workshop.
Multi-level safety interlock and limit switches prevent overtravel and collision. It meets heavy industrial safety requirements for continuous workshop operation.
This column & boom welding manipulator is widely used in heavy manufacturing sectors:
- Pressure vessel and boiler manufacturing
- Large storage tank and silo fabrication
- Industrial pipe spool prefabrication
- Large diameter steel pipe production
- Chemical and environmental protection cylindrical equipment manufacturing
For tank, pressure vessel, and pipe manufacturers, the LT-MZ1222 welding manipulator is a multi-functional automated welding solution. Its complete structural design delivers stable mechanical performance and flexible welding capability.
It helps enterprises standardize welding quality, increase output, shorten project lead times, and resolve the shortage of experienced welders, bringing reliable return on investment for metal fabrication workshops.
