Active Body Control (ABC) is a very comfortable hydraulic suspension system used in some luxury Mercedes Benz car models, whose task, apart from dampening vibrations, is also to compensate for body movements relative to the road, as well as its height, depending on the load. It works similarly to a hydropneumatic system, although the working medium is not gas.
Active Body Control (ABC) uses a hydraulic system that combines shock absorber oil into one circuit and controls the flow of operating oil between these elements. The hydraulic oil in the system is under very high pressure, which means it can flow from one area of the suspension to another in a fraction of a second. This is used to set the proper, constant ground clearance of the car depending on the dynamic load, as well as to level the car body both in the transverse axis (when negotiating a curve) and in the longitudinal axis (when braking or accelerating). In addition to fully automatic operation, the driver can influence the operation of the ABC system. The control is carried out using a button in the cabin, which can be used to change the vehicle's ground clearance or select one of the preset damping characteristics of the shock absorbers (stiffer or softer).
