Measurement of Sugar and Moisture in Fruits by Near-Infrared Spectrometers

Near-infrared spectroscopy technology provides rapid, non-destructive detection for fruit quality inspection. By analyzing spectral characteristics in the near-infrared region, it enables precise measurement of internal fruit components (sugars, acidity, moisture) to support quality assessment, grading, storage, and processing decisions.

The JINSP SR100N17 and SR100N25 near-infrared refrigerated spectrometers offer versatile applications across 0.9 to 1.7μm or 0.9 to 2.5μm wavelength ranges. Featuring integrated light filters and a cooled 512-pixel InGaAs sensor array, these instruments deliver high resolution with minimal stray light, suitable for transmission, reflection, or absorption measurement methods.

Measurement Principle

The NIR band (780nm to 2500nm) triggers molecular vibrational responses through light absorption, generating spectral data directly related to sample composition. In agricultural analysis, broad peaks reveal frequency doubling and combined vibration effects from organic functional groups (C-H, O-H, N-H bonds), enabling comprehensive quality assessment of multiple components.

Measurement Methods
  • Near-infrared reflection: Detects surface characteristics (color, luster) but not internal quality.
  • Near-infrared transmission: Suitable for transparent samples; limited fruit penetration.
  • Near-infrared diffuse reflection: Ideal for opaque solids, revealing internal fruit structure for sugar content, acidity, and other quality parameters.
Applications
  • Quality assessment: Measure firmness, sweetness, and acidity.
  • Classification: Identify different fruit types.
  • Functional fruit evaluation: Screen for special components.
  • Disease monitoring: Diagnose conditions like citrus Huanglongbing.
