When extruded profiles need to enhance their mechanical properties, the 6000 series alloys must be aged. How much the mechanical properties can be enhanced depends on the type of alloy and the conditions of the aging process, which range from natural aging at room temperature to various higher temperature heat treatments known as artificial aging.
As far as the strength of 6000 series alloys is concerned, the direct correlation is that the material is deformed in the process, for the internal particles to move the impedance of the ability to move, when the material is given to the stress of the particles will begin to dislocate and move, and when the stress increases again and again, the number of such particles to move will be increased and intensely enhanced, and until the material is damaged to terminate the ability of the particles to move to the magnesium siliconization grains to stop.
The ability of the particles to shift is prevented by the magnesium silicide grains, so that the strength of the material can be increased. The size and density of these magnesium silicide grains are controlled by aging conditions.
Mechanical property requirements also impose some constraints on the extrusion process. It is defined by the extrusion speed and the temperature of the aluminum blank, which increases the correlation between the mechanical property and the process variables, and at the same time combines the surface quality of the finished product, the extrusion pressure, and other related factors.
In addition, a green demarcation curve is added to represent the demarcation line where the mechanical properties of the extruded products are suitable for the requirements. When aluminum blanks containing coarse magnesium silicide grains are used or when thicker profiles are extruded, and when mechanical properties are required to be higher, this demarcation curve will be shifted to the right.
