Precipitation hardening: Heat-treated aluminum alloys are 2XXX, 6XXX and 7XXX, which use quenching and aging to produce a phase change in the internal structure of the material, resulting in detailed precipitates, through which the material is strengthened. This phenomenon is called precipitation hardening or age hardening.
Solid solution treatment: Non-heat treatment alloys are not precipitation hardening phenomenon (but there will be precipitates), so its strengthening effect is usually with the help of general methods, such as solid solution strengthening, grain refinement strengthening.
Precipitation hardening heat treatment procedure for aluminum alloys:
A practical precipitation hardening heat treatment program must include the following three basic steps:
- Solid solution heat treatment (solution treatment)
- Quenching (quench)
- Aging treatment (aging treatment)
Solid solution treatment refers to the material temperature to solid solution single-phase area for a period of time, in order to allow all solutes into the base of a single α-phase; quenching refers to the solid solution treatment of the material after rapid cooling to get saturated solid solution. Ageing treatment is to leave the supersaturated solid solution at a constant temperature, so that it will gradually precipitate precipitates and cause changes in properties. This constant temperature if room temperature is called natural aging (natural aging), if called high temperature furnace is called artificial aging (artificial aging).
