Vacuum casting uses silicon moulds to create high-quality prototypes of plastic and rubber components using two-component polyurethane resins.
What is Vacuum Casting?
Vacuum casting, also known as Urethane casting or Polyurethane casting, utilizes silicone moulds to produce plastic and rubber components under vacuum. This highly adaptable manufacturing process can mimic injection moulding to create complex parts in polyurethane resins and cast nylon.
The vacuum process ensures high-quality, bubble-free castings with smooth surface textures and no blemishes. This method is particularly valuable for rapid prototyping of injection moulding parts and should be considered when selecting rapid prototyping processes for plastic or rubber components.
Applications of Vacuum Casting
Vacuum casting is one of the most cost-effective methods for producing high-quality, low-volume plastic parts that closely resemble injection moulded components. These parts are ideal for form, fit, and function testing during design stages, as well as for marketing, user testing, and product verification purposes.
A wide variety of urethane casting resins are commercially available to meet diverse design requirements including temperature resistance, surface textures, hardness, and transparency levels (from fully opaque to completely transparent). The process can also create high-quality wax masters for investment casting to enhance intricate feature details.
