Wire-cut discharge machining is a versatile precision machining process that can be used to manufacture complex shapes and geometrics. It is commonly used in the aerospace and medical industries where strict tolerances need to be met, and can also be used to manufacture hand plates or mass-produced parts.
Electrical discharge wire cutting (wire-walking) is an electrothermal production process that uses electrical discharge to remove material from the workpiece. It is an improvement on traditional EDM methods, is compatible with almost all conductive materials, and can be processed into complex designs and shapes.
From hand plates to complete parts production processes, many industries use wire-cut discharge machining machines:
- Aerospace Industry: Preferred for parts requiring excellent surface finish and precision, such as engines, turbine blades, and landing gear components.
- Automotive Industry: Ideal for complex shapes and high precision requirements, particularly for opening holes and cavities in custom automotive parts.
- Medical Industry: Suitable for all medical fields, capable of adding tiny features to parts like dental implants and syringe components without compromising structural integrity.
| Aluminum | Has excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. May produce gelatinous buildup if not properly operated during processing. |
| Titanium | EDM machining is well suited for titanium. Requires deionized water as a medium to help control heat generation during processing. |
| Steel | Very strong metal often processed with wire cutting machines for complex features. Requires heat management precautions. |
| Brass | High tensile strength and easy to machine, but requires slow cutting speed due to its soft nature. |
- High cutting precision with minimal need for further processing
- Capable of manufacturing complex designs and shapes difficult for traditional CNC machining
- Ideal for processing small parts and highly fine cutting projects
- Single-stage processing without burrs or deformations
- Continuous, uninterrupted process
In addition to Wire EDM, there are drilling EDM (using tubular electrodes for finer, deeper holes) and sinker EDM (using shaped conductive metal electrodes).
Laser cutting uses a high-power thermal beam, while wire-cut EDM uses electrical discharge between the wire and workpiece.
Deionized water serves as a coolant with low carbon properties to regulate dielectric temperature during processing.
