Wire-cut discharge machining is a versatile precision machining process that can be used to manufacture complex shapes and geometrics. It is commonly used in the aerospace and medical industries where strict tolerances need to be met, and can also be used to manufacture hand plates or mass-produced parts.
Electrical discharge wire cutting (wire-walking) is an electrothermal production process that uses electrical discharge to remove material from the workpiece. It is an improvement on traditional EDM methods, is compatible with almost all conductive materials, and can be processed into complex designs and shapes.
Wire cutting is a non-contact reduction manufacturing process that uses charged fine wires and dielectric fluids to process metal parts into the desired shape. The process produces precise cuts by melting or vaporizing the material instead of removing it with a tool. Therefore, it can easily process parts features that are not suitable for traditional processing techniques.
From hand plates to complete parts production processes, many industries use wire-cut discharge machining machines:
- Aerospace Industry: Preferred for parts that cannot withstand high temperatures and stresses. Used for engines, turbine blades, landing gear parts, etc.
- Medical Industry: Suitable for complex medical parts with high precision requirements like dental implants and syringe parts.
- Automotive Industry: Used for complex automotive parts with high precision requirements, especially for opening holes and cavities.
| Aluminum | Has excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. Naturally soft and may produce gelatinous buildup after processing. Requires proper operation for effective cutting. |
| Titanium | EDM machining is well suited for titanium as it can withstand the viscosity of this alloy. Requires deionized water as a medium to control heat. |
| Steel | Very strong metal; wire cutting machines are preferred for complex steel features. Generates significant heat requiring precautions. |
| Brass | High tensile strength and easy to machine, but requires slow cutting speed due to its soft nature. |
- Cutting precision with minimal need for further processing
- Suitable for complex designs difficult to achieve with traditional CNC machining
- Single processing stage cuts material without burrs or deformations
- Continuous process without interruption
- Ideal for small parts and highly fine cutting projects
In addition to Wire EDM, there are drilling EDM and sinker EDM. They differ in the electrodes they use. Drilling EDM uses tubular electrodes for finer, deeper holes, while sinker EDM uses shaped conductive metal electrodes.
Laser cutting uses a high-power thermal beam, while wire-cut EDM uses electrical discharge from a wire to process the workpiece.
Deionized water has low carbon properties and serves as a coolant to regulate the dielectric temperature during the process.
