M4 M5 Stainless Steel Hex Head Standoff

A standoff is a specialized fastener with one end featuring an internal thread and the other end an external thread. Broadly speaking, standoffs also include variants with internal threads on both ends. These components typically feature a hexagonal shape and serve dual purposes of fastening and isolation. Originally manufactured from hexagonal copper rods, standoffs are also commonly referred to as copper columns, hexagonal copper columns, copper isolation columns, or copper spacer columns.

Primary Applications:

Standoff screws are predominantly used in computer and circuit board industries. When installed, one end screws into the locked object while the hexagonal post remains exposed, enabling the fixation or isolation of other components.

Main specifications include M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, and M10, with hexagonal post dimensions ranging from 5mm to 15mm. The M3 series is among the most commonly used.

Also known as yin-yang studs, these hexagonal fasteners feature opposing internal and external threads, providing both fastening and isolation functions. In computer applications, the external thread connects to the motherboard while the internal thread isolates the motherboard from the sheet metal casing.

Stainless Steel Characteristics

Basic Properties: Stainless steel is an alloy material renowned for its corrosion resistance, primarily composed of iron, chromium, and nickel. These elements provide exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal.

201, 304, and 316 are austenitic stainless steels, typically non-magnetic. Any weak magnetic properties result from smelting composition segregation or improper heat treatment. The corrosion resistance stems from a protective chromium oxide layer that forms on the surface.

At temperatures between 450°C-900°C, structural changes occur, forming chromium carbides along crystal edges that compromise the protective oxide layer and reduce corrosion resistance (intergranular corrosion). Low-carbon variants (304L, 316L) minimize this effect, particularly in high-chloride environments.

Material Classification:

  • 200 Series (201, 202): Resistant to weak corrosive media (air, steam, water)
  • 300 Series (304, 316): Acid-resistant, suitable for chemical environments

Aesthetic Considerations: For enhanced appearance, stainless steel with special finishes is recommended. While both stainless and carbon steel can be polished to a bright finish, carbon steel requires protective coatings to maintain its appearance and prevent rusting.
