Product Description
M4 M6 Stainless Steel Hexagon Head Standoff

A standoff is a specialized fastener with one end featuring internal threads and the other end featuring external threads. In broader terms, standoffs also include screws with internal threads on both ends. Characterized by their hexagonal shape, these components serve dual purposes of fastening and isolation. Typically manufactured from hexagonal copper rods, standoffs are also commonly referred to as copper columns, hexagonal copper columns, copper isolation columns, or copper spacer columns.

Primary Applications: Standoff screws are predominantly used in computer and circuit board industries. When one end is screwed into the object being secured, the exposed hexagonal post allows for the fixation or isolation of other components.

Standard Specifications: Main specifications include M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, and M10, with hexagonal post sizes ranging from 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, to 15mm. The M3 series is among the most commonly used.

Hexagonal studs, also known as yin-yang studs, feature internal threads on one end and external threads on the other, both with hexagonal heads. These components excel in both fastening and isolation applications.

Typical Use Case: In computer mainframes, the external thread connects to the motherboard inside the chassis, while the internal thread isolates the motherboard from the sheet metal enclosure.

Stainless Steel Characteristics

Basic Properties: Stainless steel is an alloy material renowned for its corrosion resistance, primarily composed of iron, chromium, and nickel. These elements collectively provide exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Maintenance Guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use mild detergents and soft cloths for routine cleaning. Avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners that may damage the stainless steel surface. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Stain Removal: For stubborn stains, use specialized stainless steel cleaners according to manufacturer instructions. Alcohol or vinegar can also serve as effective cleaning agents for stainless steel surfaces.
Stainless Steel Composition
No. C% Cr% Ni% Mo%
304 0.07 17.5-19.5 8.0-10.5 /
316 0.08 16.0-18.0 10.0-14.0 2.00-3.00
301 0.15 16.0-18.1 6-8 /
310 0.08 24-26 19-22 /
304L 0.03 18-20 8-12 /
316L 0.03 16-18 10-14 2-3

201, 304, and 316 are austenitic stainless steels, typically non-magnetic. Any weak magnetic properties result from composition segregation during smelting or improper heat treatment leading to small amounts of martensite or ferrite within the austenite structure. The corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel stems from the chromium oxide protective layer formed on the metal surface.

Intergranular Corrosion Note: When heated to 450-900°C, the material's structure changes, forming chromium carbides along grain boundaries that prevent chromium oxide protective layer formation, thereby reducing corrosion resistance. This phenomenon is known as intergranular corrosion, which led to the development of 304L and 316L variants with lower carbon content to mitigate this issue.

410 (1Cr13) Stainless Steel: This martensitic stainless steel offers excellent hardenability, high hardness, good toughness, corrosion resistance, thermal strength, and cold deformation properties, along with superior vibration damping characteristics. It requires high or low temperature tempering, avoiding treatment between 370-560°C.

Stainless Steel vs Carbon Steel

Appearance: For enhanced aesthetics, stainless steel with special finishes is preferable. While both materials can be polished to a bright finish, carbon steel requires immediate clear coating or painting post-polishing to maintain its appearance and prevent rust.

Cost Considerations: Stainless steel generally commands a higher price than carbon steel due to its alloying elements (chromium, nickel, manganese). Carbon steel, composed primarily of iron and carbon, presents a more budget-friendly option for cost-sensitive projects.
