Product Overview
A standoff is a specialized fastener with internal threads at one end and external threads at the other end. The broad definition also includes screws with internal threads at both ends. Featuring a hexagonal shape, these components serve dual purposes of fastening and isolation. Typically manufactured from hexagonal copper rods, standoffs are also referred to as copper columns, hexagonal copper posts, copper isolation posts, or copper spacer columns.
Applications
Hexagonal standoffs are primarily used in computer hardware, circuit boards, and electronics industries. When installed, one end screws into the mounting surface while the hexagonal column remains exposed, enabling secure fastening or isolation of components. In computer systems, for example, the external thread connects to the motherboard while the internal thread provides spacing between the motherboard and chassis.
Brass standoffs offer excellent durability and corrosion resistance. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, demonstrates strong wear resistance and is commonly used in valves, piping systems, HVAC connections, and heat exchangers. The material properties vary based on zinc content:
