Odorless lanolin is a pale yellow, pliable grease extracted from wool with a faint characteristic odor. It is a transparent or nearly transparent yellow liquid when melted. It is insoluble in water and to a lesser extent in hot ethanol. Odorless lanolin is chemically classified as a wax and is a complex mixture of 33 high molecular weight alcohols (mainly sterols) and 36 natural esters of fatty acids with polyesters.

Lanolin is an extremely effective emollient that restores and maintains the all-important hydration of the stratum corneum (maintenance of moisture balance), thus preventing dry and chapped skin. Moreover, it does not interfere with the skin's normal respiratory barrier. Lanolin has been shown to build up water content in the skin to 10-30% of normal levels by slowing epidermal transdermal water loss.
