Odourless Lanolin is a pale yellow, pliable grease derived from wool with a faint characteristic odour. When melted it is a clear or nearly clear yellow liquid. It is insoluble in water and to a lesser extent in hot ethanol. Odourless lanolin is chemically classified as a wax and is a complex mixture of 33 high molecular weight alcohols (mainly sterols) and 36 natural esters of fatty acids with polyesters. The ester content is at least 98 per cent and the ratio of fatty alcohols to fatty acids is close to 50/50.

Cosmetics: Lanolin is an exceptionally effective emollient, capable of restoring and maintaining all essential hydration in the stratum corneum (water balance), thus preventing dryness and cracking of the skin. Moreover, it does not impair the skin's natural respiratory barrier. Experiments have confirmed that lanolin can accumulate skin moisture to 10-30% above normal levels by slowing transepidermal water loss. Lanolin has the unique property of absorbing twice its weight in water and has the physical attributes of increasing adhesion to dry skin while forming a protective barrier on the skin. When used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical formulations, lanolin is compatible with most esters and waxes, often emulsified with water to create highly stable W/O emulsions for application.
