Odorless lanolin is a pale yellow, pliable wax derived from wool, with a faint characteristic odor. When melted, it forms a transparent to near-transparent yellow liquid. Insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in hot ethanol, this complex mixture comprises:
- ≥98% esters (natural/polyester types)
- 33 high molecular weight alcohols (primarily sterols)
- 36 fatty acids
Maintaining a near 50:50 ratio of fatty alcohols to fatty acids, it is chemically classified as a wax.
