Mud Pump Liner Rubber Seal Ring Overview
The Mud Pump Liner Rubber Seal Ring is a critical component used in Mud Pump Fluid End assemblies. Also known as a packing or toric joint, this mechanical gasket features a torus shape with a round cross-section, designed to seat securely in grooves and create effective seals when compressed between components.
Applications and Uses
O-rings serve in both static and dynamic applications where relative motion occurs between components. Dynamic applications include rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons, while static applications involve fluid or gas sealing where the O-ring is compressed to eliminate clearance.
Key characteristics of effective static O-ring applications include:
- Compression creating zero clearance between surfaces
- Vulcanized solid construction for impermeability
- Material resistance to fluid or gas degradation
O-rings remain one of the most widely used seals in machine design due to their cost-effectiveness, manufacturing simplicity, reliability, and straightforward installation requirements. They have been tested to withstand pressures up to 5,000 psi (35 megapascals), with maximum recommended pressure depending on seal hardness and gland clearance specifications.
Sizing and Specifications
O-rings are available in various standardized sizes. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Standard 568 (AS568) specifies inside diameters, cross-sections, tolerances, and size identification codes (dash numbers) for sealing applications and straight thread tube fitting boss gaskets.
Sizing standards include:
- British Standard (BS) imperial and metric sizes
- Typical dimensions: internal diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and thickness/cross section (CS)
- Metric O-rings defined by ID * CS with material and shore hardness specifications
Example metric O-ring part number: 2*1N70 indicates 2mm internal diameter with 1mm cross section made from Nitrile rubber with 70 Shore hardness. BS O-rings follow standardized reference systems.
Notably, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Tewkesbury established a Guinness World Record by producing the world's largest O-ring with a 364-meter circumference (approximately 116m internal diameter) and 7.2mm cross section, installed around Tewkesbury Abbey.
