Protection Circuit Module (PCM) Functions
Overcharge Protection
When the battery voltage exceeds the safe upper limit (4.25V to 4.3V for a single cell), the protection board quickly cuts off the charging circuit to prevent electrolyte decomposition, gas generation, or thermal runaway, avoiding the risk of fire or explosion.
Over-discharge Protection
During discharge, if the voltage drops below a preset lower limit (typically 2.5V to 3.0V), the protection board immediately disconnects the discharge path to prevent damage to electrode materials or a sudden drop in battery capacity.
Overcurrent and Short-circuit Protection
By monitoring the circuit current, when the current exceeds a set threshold, the protection board shuts off the MOS switch within milliseconds, cutting off the circuit. Short-circuit protection, for extreme overcurrent conditions, has an even faster response time (microseconds) to prevent high temperatures or damage caused by instantaneous high current.
Temperature Protection
Integrated with NTC thermistors and other sensors, it monitors battery temperature in real time. If the temperature exceeds 60°C to 70°C during charging, exceeds 80°C during discharging, or the temperature drops below 0°C during charging, the protection board will automatically block charging and discharging to prevent high-temperature decomposition or lithium dendrite formation.
Balancing Function
Through passive or active balancing circuitry, it adjusts the voltage differences between individual cells to ensure cell consistency, improving overall capacity and lifespan in multi-cell series battery packs.
