Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that control equipment operation through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which engages the starter drive (Bendix gear) and turns the flywheel to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel engines. Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages automatically.
