Manual starters are simple devices operated by hand, featuring buttons or rotary knobs that control connected equipment. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping motors. Unlike automatic starters, they don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause motors to restart when power returns.

When the engine is activated (via start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component directs power from the battery to the starter motor, engaging the starter drive (Bendix gear system) which connects with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor turns the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine runs independently, the starter disengages from the flywheel as external power is no longer required.
