Production Process
Silicon metal is produced by reducing high-purity silica (SiO₂ content >99%) in an electric arc furnace using petroleum coke, bituminous coal, or charcoal as reducing agents that serve three critical functions:
- Electrical conductivity for furnace operation
- Active carbon for completing reduction reactions
- Creating a strong, porous hearth for rapid chemical reactions
