API 660 Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger with ASME U Stamp Certificate for High-Temperature Service
YUHONG Group Co., Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of heat exchange and pressure vessel equipment. The company produces shell and tube heat exchangers, air-cooled heat exchangers, U-tubes and finned tubes, as well as related components including tube sheets, baffles, elliptical heads and flanges. The enterprise owns three manufacturing bases covering a total area of 184,000 square meters. Valid certifications held: ASME (U, S, PP), NB, PED, API 660, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 3834.
The shell and tube heat exchanger is certified with ASME U Stamp and compliant with API 660 standard for high-temperature operation. It is engineered for the most severe service conditions involving high operating temperatures and pressures.
The ASME U Stamp certifies that the equipment is designed and manufactured in strict accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1, under the supervision of an authorized inspector.
Standard API 660 sets stringent requirements for mechanical design calculation, welding, inspection methods and acceptance tests, suitable for application in the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries.
The combination of the above two specifications ensures the equipment features superior resistance to cyclic loading, thermal expansion and corrosive environments.
| Component | Material (ASME / ASTM) | Main Features |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | ASME SA 516 Gr.70 | Carbon steel suitable for service temperatures down to -46°C. It features high impact toughness and good weldability. Suitable for service in H₂S-containing environments (NACE). |
| Tubes |
ASME SA 179 / ASME SA 213 |
SA 179 – Seamless carbon steel tubes for heat exchangers. SA 213 T11, T22 – Chromium‑molybdenum alloy steels for high temperature and high pressure service. |
| Tubesheet | ASME SA 336 Gr.F11 / SA 266 Gr.2 | Forged alloy steel, ensuring reliable tube rolling expansion and resistance to thermomechanical stresses. |
| Baffles | ASME SA 516 Gr.60 / Gr.70 | Guides the heat carrier flow in the shell-side space, increasing turbulence and heat transfer efficiency. |
Tests are carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of ASME Section VIII Div.1 and API 660:
- Hydrostatic test: The tube side and shell side are tested at a pressure of no less than 1.5 times the design pressure, to verify the overall structural strength and tightness of all joints.
- NDT - Non-Destructive Testing:
- 100% radiographic inspection of shell weld seams
- Liquid penetrant testing or magnetic particle testing
- Ultrasonic thickness measurement of base metal
- Leak test: Mandatory tightness inspection for tube bundles and expanded joints, using helium leak detection or underwater air pressure testing.
- PMI - Positive Material Identification: Rapid chemical composition analysis of materials to eliminate material delivery mismatch risks.
- Suitability for High Temperature Service: Adopting SA 516 Gr.70 material for the shell and alloy tubes SA 213 T11/T22 enables the equipment to operate continuously at temperatures up to +600 °C and working pressure up to 10 MPa (150 bar available upon request).
- Thermal stress compensation: The floating head or U-tube structure prevents shell deformation caused by sharp temperature fluctuations during startup and shutdown conditions.
- High heat transfer efficiency: The overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value) reaches 150–3000 W/(m²·K), benefited from optimized tube layout (triangular or square pitch) and the adoption of segmental baffles.
- Easy maintenance: The removable tube bundle allows mechanical cleaning, replacement of damaged components and internal inspection without dismantling the shell.
API 660 class equipment is indispensable for the following facilities::
- Oil & Gas, Refinery: Crude oil preheating, distillate cooling, and column reboilers.
- Petrochemical: Reaction gas cooling, vapor condensation, and quench heat exchangers.
- High-temperature Processes: Waste heat recovery of flue gas and synthesis gas cooling.
