How to extend the service life of geomembrane?

The service life of geomembrane is affected by many factors such as material quality, construction technology, use environment and maintenance measures. The following is a comprehensive strategy to extend its service life:

Raw material selection and production optimization

1. Add anti-aging ingredients

• Adding UV inhibitors, antioxidants, light stabilizers and dark carbon black (accounting for 2%-3%) during the production process can significantly delay light-oxidation aging.
• High-quality geomembranes use new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) raw materials to avoid shortening the life due to recycled or semi-recycled materials.

2. Control thickness and material

• The greater the thickness, the stronger the ability to resist environmental stress cracking. For example, when the thickness of HDPE geomembrane is ≥2.5mm, the underground service life can reach more than 50 years.

Construction process control

1. Base treatment

• Remove sharp objects and compact the base. The slope design is recommended to be 1:1.0 to prevent sliding and mechanical damage.

2. Joint welding technology

• Use hot melt welding (double-track welding machine) to ensure that the joint strength reaches more than 80% of the parent material to avoid leakage caused by manual bonding.

3. Avoid exposed construction

• Cover the protective layer in time after laying (such as non-woven geotextile + silty clay, thickness ≥ 200mm) to reduce direct ultraviolet rays.

• Check the integrity of joints and covering layers every year, and repair damaged areas in time (such as hot melt patches or adhesives).
