Product Overview
HUONA-Alloy-4J36 (Expansion alloy), commonly known as Invar, FeNi36, Invar Standard, or Vacodil36, is a nickel-iron alloy renowned for its exceptionally low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). The name "Invar" derives from "invariable," reflecting its minimal expansion or contraction with temperature changes.
Invented in 1896 by Swiss physicist Charles Édouard Guillaume, who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1920 for this discovery, Invar has enabled significant advancements in scientific instruments and precision engineering.
Applications
HUONA-Alloy-4J36 (Invar) is utilized in applications requiring high dimensional stability, including:
- Precision instruments and clocks
- Seismic creep gauges
- Television shadow-mask frames
- Valves in motors
- Antimagnetic watches
- High-precision leveling rods in land surveying
- Piston struts to limit thermal expansion in cylinders

Heat Treatment Processes
Annealing for Stress Relief
Heated to 530~550℃ and hold 1~2 hours, then cool down.
Annealing
To eliminate hardening from cold-rolled or cold drawing processes. Heat to 830~880℃ in vacuum, hold for 30 minutes.
Stabilization Process
- In protective media, heated to 830℃, hold 20 minutes to 1 hour, then quench
- Due to stress from quenching, heat to 315℃, hold 1~4 hours
Precautions
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment
- Surface treatment options: sandblasting, polishing, or pickling
- Alloy can be cleaned using 25% hydrochloric acid pickling solution at 70℃ to remove oxidized surface
