A paper cup fan, also often called a paper cup blank or paper cup sheet, is the pre-cut, precisely shaped piece of paperboard that forms the side wall of a disposable paper cup.
Raw Material of the Paper Cup Fan: It starts as a large roll of specially manufactured paperboard, known as "cupstock paper." This paperboard is typically food-grade and is designed for strength, rigidity, and the ability to hold liquids.
Coating of the Paper Cup Fan : Before being cut, the paperboard is usually coated with a thin layer of a barrier material, most commonly:
- Polyethylene (PE): This plastic coating makes the paper waterproof and grease-resistant, and allows it to be heat-sealed.
It's used for both hot and cold cups.
- Polylactic Acid (PLA): A bio-based and biodegradable alternative to PE, often used for eco-friendly cups.
- Aqueous/Water-based coatings: Newer, plastic-free coatings that allow the paper to be more easily recyclable or compostable.
Printing (Optional) of the Paper Cup Fan : If the finished paper cups are to have a brand logo, design, or any other graphics, the coated paperboard roll is then fed into large printing machines (like flexographic or offset printers) to apply the desired visuals.
Die-Cutting: After coating and printing (if applicable), the large paperboard roll is then put into a die-cutting machine. This machine precisely cuts out individual, fan-shaped pieces.
Assembly (Cup Forming): These individual paper cup fans are then stacked and shipped to paper cup manufacturing facilities. In the factory, they are loaded into automated paper cup forming machines. The machine takes one fan at a time, rolls it into the cup's body shape, heat-seals the side seam, attaches a separate pre-cut circular bottom piece, and then curls the top rim to create a smooth, finished edge.
In essence, the paper cup fan is the critical semi-finished material that simplifies and speeds up the process of making paper cups. Instead of cutting and shaping each cup from a large roll at the cup-making machine, the cup fans arrive ready for the final assembly steps.
