What is PLA Coating?
PLA Coating is a bio-based and compostable alternative to traditional plastic coatings like polyethylene (PE).
- PLA stands for Polylactic Acid.
- It is a polymer derived from renewable resources like corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava.
- It is applied to paper (e.g., for cups, food containers) in the same way as PE coating, to provide a liquid-proof barrier.
Key Characteristics of PLA Coating:
- Compostable: This is its most significant advantage. Under industrial composting conditions (with specific temperature, humidity, and microorganisms), PLA coating will break down into water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter, leaving no toxic residue.
- Biobased: It is made from plants, not fossil fuels, which reduces the carbon footprint.
- Clarity and Gloss: PLA coating often provides a clearer and glossier finish than PE, enhancing the visual appeal of printed graphics.
- Food Safety: Like PE, it is safe for direct food contact.
Important Limitations:
- Not for Hot Liquids: PLA has a lower heat resistance than PE. It can soften at temperatures around 50-60°C (122-140°F), making it unsuitable for very hot beverages like coffee or tea.
- Industrial Composting Required: It will not break down effectively in a backyard compost pile or in landfills. It requires a specific industrial composting facility.
- Higher Cost: It is generally more expensive than conventional PE coating.
