How is FDY Polyester Yarn Made? (The Spin-Draw Process)

The key to FDY's properties lies in its integrated spin-draw process:

1. Melting & Extrusion: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) chips are melted and forced through a spinneret—a metal plate with tiny holes—to form continuous filaments.

2. Quenching: The hot filaments are cooled and solidified by a flow of air.

3. Drawing & Orienting (The Critical Step): Immediately after spinning, the filaments are drawn (stretched) between two sets of godet rollers running at different speeds. This stretching aligns the polymer molecules, significantly increasing the yarn's tensile strength and reducing its elongation.

4. Heat Setting: The drawn yarn is heat-set under tension to lock in the molecular orientation and ensure dimensional stability.

5. Winding: The finished FDY is wound onto bobbins, ready for direct use in weaving or knitting.

This continuous, one-step process is what differentiates FDY from POY (Partially Oriented Yarn) and makes it exceptionally consistent and strong.
