What is Photo Chemical Etching?

Photo Chemical Etching. also known as Etching, Chemical Etching, Photochemical machining, is a subtractive sheet metal machining process which uses chemical etchants to create complex and highly accurate precision components from almost any metal.

How does photo chemical etching work?

The photo chemical etching process works by ‘printing’ the component's design onto photoresist which is laminated onto metal sheet. The areas of photoresist which have not been printed are removed, exposing the metal, which is subsequently etched away.

Process of Photo Chemical Etching:

1. Design Creation: A detailed CAD design is made to define the etching pattern.
2. Photoresist Application: A photoresist layer is applied to the metal surface.
3. Exposure & Development: The design is exposed to UV light and developed, transferring the pattern.
4. Etching: The metal is immersed in a chemical solution that etches away the exposed areas.
5. Cleaning: After etching, the component is thoroughly cleaned to remove any residue.
