1831 is a quaternary ammonium salt, used in the formulation of hair conditioners, hair dyes, other hair care products and some skin care products.

It acts as an antistatic agent (by naturally carrying positive charges and attracting them to skin and hair proteins with slightly negative charges), a surfactant and a preservative.

It also helps to form emulsions by reducing the surface tension of the substance to be emulsified and helps to disperse or suspend insoluble solids in the liquid.
