Q: Will a fan clutch work properly if the engine’s water pump is weak?
A: No, it might not. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator—if it’s weak, coolant flows slowly, so the radiator can’t cool the engine well. Even if the fan clutch works perfectly (speeding up the fan), the slow coolant flow means the engine still might overheat. You’ll need to fix the water pump first for the clutch to be effective.

Q: What’s the easiest way to check if a fan clutch is engaging when the engine is hot?
A: When the engine is fully warmed up (after driving 10-15 minutes), stand near the engine bay (with the engine running) and listen. You should hear the fan speed up noticeably when the engine temp rises (check the gauge). Or, carefully put your hand near the radiator (don’t touch it!)—you’ll feel more airflow when the clutch engages. Just be careful of moving parts.

Q: Can a fan clutch be damaged by using a pressure washer to clean the engine bay?
A: Yes, if you’re not careful. High-pressure water can force its way into the clutch’s bearing (causing rust) or electrical connections (for electronic ones, causing short circuits). When cleaning, keep the pressure washer nozzle at least 30cm away from the clutch, and avoid spraying directly at the clutch’s seals or wiring. Use low pressure if possible.
