Q: What is a "runaway" fan clutch?
A: This refers to a faulty fan clutch that remains permanently fully engaged. The fan then runs at full power all the time like a rigid fan, causing power loss, soaring fuel consumption, excessive noise, and potentially abnormal sounds due to bearing or seal failure. This is one of the most common failure modes.

Q: Are fan clutches used in electric vehicles (EVs)?
A: Pure EVs have no engine but still have cooling systems (for the battery, motor, and electronics). They do not need traditional fan clutches. Instead, they use brushless electric fans controlled by an electronic control unit, which can provide continuous variable speed. The control logic is similar to a traditional clutch, but the actuator is completely different.

Q: How can you visually tell if a fan clutch is working?
A: After a cold start, listen at the front of the engine bay. Normally, the fan noise should be very low or silent for the first few minutes. If the fan is very loud when cold, or never gets loud when hot, there may be a problem.
