Lithium-ion batteries are the most common battery type used for electric vehicles. During their lifespan, these batteries undergo various vibrations and temperature changes. Several test standards have been developed to simulate long-term environmental effects on batteries at different size levels (cell, module, pack).
SAE J2380 Standard
The SAE J2380 standard vibration profiles simulate the effect of driving 100,000 miles on battery packs and modules. The standard requires random vibration profiles applied across all three perpendicular axes for time periods ranging from 9 minutes to 38 hours each.
SAE J2464 Standard
Evaluates abuse tolerance for cells and battery packs to measure response for any RESS (rechargeable energy storage system). Includes:
- Thermal shock cycling: 5 cycles (70°C to -40°C), 1 hour per cycle at cell level
- Shock vibration test: 3 positive and 3 negative direction half-sine shocks in each axis
IEC 62660-2 Standard
Specifies reliability and abuse testing for EV lithium-ion cells:
- Random vibration test: 8 hours on each plane
- Mechanical shock test (half-sine) in all six spatial directions
- Temperature test: 5 K/min to 130°C, maintained for 30 min
- Thermal cycling: 30 cycles (85°C to -40°C)
UN 38.3 Standard
Required for lithium-ion battery transport certification:
- Thermal test: 10 cycles (72°C to -40°C) plus 24-hour ambient storage
- Vibration test: 3-hour swept sine test in three perpendicular positions
- Shock test: 18 half-sine shocks (3 positive/negative in each position)
