How It Works

A copper bus bar functions as a low-impedance conductor distributing high currents across multiple circuits. Unlike insulated cables, the rigid bus bar provides a direct, short-length path for current flow between incoming power sources and outgoing feeders.

When installed inside a switchgear cabinet, the bus bar connects the main breaker to branch breakers or disconnects. Due to copper’s high conductivity (second only to silver), voltage drop along the bar is minimal. Its large cross-sectional area and thermal mass allow it to carry hundreds or thousands of amperes without excessive temperature rise.
