ASTM A179 Carbon Steel Longitudinal Finned Tubes for Heat Exchangers
Product Definition

Longitudinal finned tubes are produced by resistance welding fins along the long direction of the tube. The fins first form a U-shaped channel so that each leg of the U-shape forms a fin. The channel is cut to the appropriate length, then oriented along the length of the tube and resistance welded in place. The channels are pairs of soldered, diametrically opposed, so the number of fins specified must be a multiple of four.

Base Pipe/Tube Materials:

Carbon/alloy steel (A106, A333, A179, A335 P5, P22, P9), stainless steel (TP304, TP316L, TP321), copper alloy (CuNi 70/30, CuNi 90/10), and other materials.

Fin Materials:

Carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper alloy, etc.

ASTM A179 Base Tube Details

This specification covers minimum-wall-thickness, seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. Covers tubes 1⁄8 to 3 in. [3.2 to 76.2 mm] in outside diameter.

  • Manufacture: Seamless process, cold drawn
  • Heat treatment: At 1200°F [650°C] or higher after final cold draw pass
  • Surface Condition: Free of scale (slight oxidation permitted)
  • Tests: Flattening, Flaring, Flange, Hardness, Hydrostatic
