The well control system is the safety line of defense in drilling operations. Its core function is to balance formation oil and gas pressure, preventing and handling major downhole accidents such as kicks, blowouts, and lost circulation. It is the essential safety equipment for drilling high-pressure oil and gas formations.
1. Blowout Preventer Stack (BOP): The core safety equipment installed at the wellhead. It comes in ram-type BOPs, annular BOPs, and shear ram BOPs. During normal operations the passage remains open; when kick or blowout hazards arise, it can rapidly close the wellhead, seal the annulus between the drill string and the wellbore, and even shear through the drill string to completely shut in the well, blocking the upward flow path of oil and gas.
2. Choke and Kill Manifold: Used in conjunction with the BOP to control the pressure and flow rate of returning fluid at the wellhead. Through choking (pressure relief) and kill operations, it restores pressure balance in the wellbore, enabling controlled handling of kick and blowout hazards.
3. Hydraulic Control System: Provides hydraulic power for the BOPs, enabling rapid opening and closing. It responds quickly and acts stably, adapting to emergency rescue conditions.
4. Drilling Fluid Pressure Monitoring Device: Monitors the hydrostatic pressure of the fluid column in the wellbore in real time, dynamically matching formation pressure, providing early warning of pressure imbalance risks, and preventing well control accidents at the source.
