The IFM PN7093 is an electronic pressure monitor with an integrated digital display, designed for precise and repeatable measurement of relative pressure in industrial systems. Working in the 0–25 bar range (0–363 psi, 0–2.5 MPa), it is aimed at applications where liquid or gas pressure must be controlled, switched and visualised directly on the machine.

Function and measurement concept

At the core of the PN7093 is a ceramic-capacitive measuring cell. This technology uses a ceramic diaphragm and a capacitor structure to convert pressure changes into an electrical signal. The ceramic material is resistant to many industrial liquids, offers excellent overload capability and shows very small long-term drift.

The device measures relative pressure, meaning the measured value is referenced to ambient atmospheric pressure rather than absolute vacuum. This is exactly what most hydraulic and pneumatic systems require, since setpoints and safety limits are usually specified in bar(g) instead of bar(a).

The electronic evaluation circuit converts the sensor signal into a digital value that is used internally for switching and for IO-Link process data. The sensor provides a fast response time, with a minimum switching response in the millisecond range and a switching frequency of up to 170 Hz, which allows reliable monitoring even in dynamic systems with rapid pressure fluctuations. 

Display, user interface and mechanical design

On the front of the device, the PN7093 offers a 4-digit alphanumeric display that can show the current pressure in bar, psi or MPa. The display can switch between red and green, which lets you implement simple visual status signalling – for example, green in the normal operating range and red when the process reaches a warning or alarm level. Additional LEDs show the selected unit and the switching status of each output. 

The sensor head includes three programming buttons, so setpoints, reset points, switching logic and delays can all be configured directly without additional tools. The upper housing section can be rotated by roughly 345°, letting you orient the display and connector after the sensor has been tightened into the process connection. In cramped cabinets, manifolds or piping systems this rotatable head makes installation much more flexible than a fixed-head device.

The process connection is a G 1/4 internal thread, a widely used standard that matches many valves, manifolds, adapters and machine ports. Wetted materials are stainless steel 1.4404, ceramic and FKM, giving a good balance of corrosion resistance and sealing performance in typical industrial liquids such as water, oils, coolants and lubricants. 

Switching outputs and IO-Link integration

The PN7093 is not just a display instrument; it is primarily a two-channel electronic pressure switch. Both outputs can be configured as normally open or normally closed, PNP or NPN, with adjustable set and reset points. This allows a wide range of control strategies:

• One output used for pump or compressor control, the second as an alarm.

• Window function: both outputs define a permitted pressure band.

• Separate switching behaviour for filling and emptying modes.

Output protection functions such as short-circuit protection, overload protection and programmable delays are built in, helping protect both the sensor and the connected PLC input cards. 

In addition, the PN7093 operates as an IO-Link device (COM2, 38.4 kBaud, IO-Link revision 1.1). Over IO-Link you can:

• Read the actual pressure value in digital form with full resolution.

• Parameterise setpoints, hysteresis, window mode, delays and damping centrally.

This makes it easy to clone settings across many sensors, monitor condition data and integrate the device into condition monitoring or predictive maintenance strategies. 

Accuracy, stability and environmental robustness

From a metrology standpoint, the PN7093 is specified with:

• Switch point accuracy better than ±0.5 % of the measuring span.

• Hysteresis and characteristic deviation typically below ±0.25 %.

• Repeatability better than ±0.1 % of span.

• Long-term stability of less than ±0.05 % of span over six months. 

Temperature coefficients are tightly controlled, with small zero and span drift in the operating range from -25 °C to +80 °C. For the user, this translates into stable switching thresholds and reliable long-term behaviour, even when the machine environment is far from laboratory conditions.

The device has IP65/IP67 ingress protection and has been tested for shock (up to 50 g) and vibration (up to 20 g in the 10–2000 Hz range), which is important for mounting on moving machinery or in areas with frequent mechanical shocks. The calculated MTTF is over 200 years, and the sensor is rated for at least 100 million switching cycles, underlining its suitability for continuous industrial duty. 

Application areas for PN7093

The datasheet specifies group 2 fluids as the standard media under the Pressure Equipment Directive, with group 1 fluids available on request. For gas applications above 25 bar, the manufacturer points to the PN7x7x series instead, so applications near the upper limit should be evaluated carefully to stay within the recommended range. 

Installation, commissioning and parameter setting

During installation, the G 1/4 process thread should be tightened using the recommended torque range (typically 25–35 Nm according to the manufacturer) to ensure proper sealing without overstressing the connection. A compatible sealing ring or thread seal should be selected based on the medium and mechanical requirements. 

Electrical connection is via a standard M12 4-pin connector with gold-plated contacts, which improves contact reliability in environments that experience vibration, condensation or repeated connection cycles. Pin assignment follows typical IFM conventions, and core colours are documented in the datasheet for fast wiring. 

Parameter setting can be done either:

• Locally with the three front buttons and the display, ideal for one-off adjustment on the machine.

• Remotely through IO-Link, using the PLC engineering software or an IO-Link configuration tool.

Using IO-Link is especially convenient for OEMs: default parameter sets can be stored at the controller level and downloaded to each sensor automatically during commissioning or after replacement, reducing manual work and the risk of configuration errors.
