Product Description
Alumina Lithium Borate Flux XRF Lithium Tetraborate X Ray Flux
Lithium Tetraborate X-ray Flux for Alumina Fusion
Determining aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), or alumina, content in clays and silicates presents significant analytical challenges. Traditional gravimetric analysis methods are both time-consuming and complex, requiring sample decomposition with precipitants, separation of aluminum from interfering elements like iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti), followed by firing and weighing processes.
Advantages of X-ray Flux Chemicals for Alumina Fusion
While various organic reagents exist for quantitative aluminum precipitation, this creates selection complexity. The gravimetric workflow itself remains lengthy and inefficient.
A modern approach to alumina quantification in siliceous materials like bauxite ore involves fusion using X-ray flux chemicals such as lithium borate salts. Preparing samples as homogeneous glass beads or discs enables geochemists to rapidly determine elemental composition down to sub-parts per million (ppm) ranges. Spectral analysis of alumina content offers superior precision compared to gravimetry, supporting streamlined workflows with enhanced repeatability.
Selecting appropriate X-ray flux chemicals is crucial. While lithium fusion serves as a general-purpose method for decomposing geological sample matrices, high-temperature chemical interactions can be demanding on samples and contribute to labware degradation.
Suitable Lithium Tetraborate Fluxes for Alumina Analysis
Lithium tetraborate (Li₂B₄O₇) represents the most commonly used flux chemical for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Its transparency to light element X-rays ensures no interference with key spectral analyses. However, its relatively high melting point (930°C) can complicate fusion with certain ores like bauxite.
Often, optimal results are achieved using mixtures of lithium tetraborate flux with lithium metaborate (LiBO₂), which features a lower melting point (849°C) and generally improved solubility characteristics.
