About Step Motors

Step motor rotational speed is defined by pulse rate, and rotational angle is determined by pulse quantity. These digital signals enable open loop control without requiring feedback structure. The unit step angle is defined by the mechanical structure of rotor and stator components.

Operating Principle

Step motors utilize a cylindrical rotor with permanent magnet and toothed outer periphery rotating within a corresponding toothed stator iron core. External current supplied to stator coils creates electromagnetism that interacts with rotor magnetic force to produce rotation.

Step motor operation requires excitation of windings through sequential DC voltage and current application. Minimum components include oscillator, driver, and DC power supply. Optional optical encoders or sensors can enhance angle accuracy and damping characteristics.

  • Full-step Driving: Operation at basic step angle resolution
  • Half-step Driving: Operation at half of basic step angle
  • Micro-step Driving: Operation at 1/N of basic step angle with electrical interpolation through controlled winding current for smooth rotation
