Operational Principles
Basic Actuation: Requires both opening and closing hydraulic pressure. Seal-off is achieved by applying hydraulic pressure to the closing chamber, raising the piston and forcing the packing element into sealing engagement with drill pipes or open bore.
Well Pressure Assistance: After initial seal establishment, well pressure helps maintain the seal (excluding 7-1/16"-15,000 and 20,000 psi models requiring sustained closing pressure).
Stripping Operations: Drill pipe can be rotated and tool joints stripped through closed packing elements while maintaining seal integrity. Optimal packing element life is achieved by setting closing chamber pressure to permit minimal drilling fluid leakage for lubrication.
Control System Integration: Compatible with standard accumulator units equipped with separate pressure regulator valves for annular BOP operation and sufficient accumulator volume.
Supplementary Components: For slow-responding pressure regulator valves, install an accumulator (surge absorber) precharged to 50% of required closing pressure in the closing chamber control line. Subsea operations may require additional accumulators in opening chamber lines to prevent pressure fluctuations.
