Grade Comparison & Properties
Corrosion Resistance (Best to Worst)
- J3 > 201 (J1) > J4 > J2
- J3 offers superior resistance to pitting and uniform corrosion due to high nickel and low copper content
- J2 may experience reduced corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments
Formability & Deep Drawing Performance (Best to Worst)
- J2 > 201 (J1) ≈ J3 > J4
- J2's copper content significantly improves ductility and cold working properties
- J4 is most difficult to form due to high nitrogen content and work hardening
Strength & Hardness (Highest to Lowest)
- J4 > 201 (J1) ≈ J3 > J2
- Nitrogen in J4 provides effective solid solution strengthening
- J2 has relatively lower strength
Weldability
All 201 series stainless steels have poorer weldability than 304 stainless steel. Weld areas are prone to corrosion resistance reduction due to chromium carbide precipitation. J4's high nitrogen content may further worsen weldability, and J2's uneven composition also results in generally poor weldability.
