Gravity Spiral Separator chute


1.Product Introduction 

The spiral separator is a core gravity separation device in chromium ore beneficiation lines. It is primarily used to achieve high-efficiency

separation based on the density difference between minerals and gangue. It is particularly suitable for processing fine-grained (0.02–2mm)

chromite placer ores or ground materials. Within a complete production line, the spiral chute often handles roughing, scavenging, and even

cleaning tasks. Its notable advantages include zero power consumption, a simple structure, and high processing capacity.



2.Application

The spiral separator is suitable for separating fine-grained (0.3--0.02 mm) materials, including iron ore, ilmenite, chromite, pyrite, zircon, rutile, monazite,

tungsten ore, tin ore, tantalum ore, niobium ore, and other non-ferrous metals, rare metals, and non-metallic minerals with specific gravity differences.


3.Working principle

1. Pulp Feeding

The ore pulp is transported by a slurry pump to the top of the spiral chute. It is then uniformly distributed into multiple spiral heads via a distributor, where it flows slowly downward along the surface of the spiral troughs.

2. Stratification in a Composite Force Field

As the pulp flows down the spiral incline, the mineral particles are subjected to a combination of several forces:

  • Gravity: Causes the mineral particles to settle downward.

  • Centrifugal Force: Pushes higher-density particles toward the outer edge.

  • Transverse Secondary Circulation: A circulation pattern where the surface water flows outward and the bottom water flows inward. This mechanism carries light minerals toward the outer rim and pushes heavy minerals toward the inner rim.

3. Zoning and Discharge

After passing through 3–5 spiral turns, minerals of different densities form stable zones:

  • Inner Zone: High-density chromite particles concentrate here to become the concentrate.

  • Middle Zone: Medium-grade minerals are collected as middlings.

  • Outer Zone: Low-density gangue is discharged with the water flow as tailings.

These three products are collected separately via a splitters (launders) located at the bottom of the unit.

4.Advantages 

  • Applicable Particle Size: 0.02–2mm; particularly suited for the separation of fine-grained chromium ore.

  • Feeding Concentration: Generally controlled between 20%–30%; concentrations that are too high or too low will negatively impact separation efficiency.

  • Processing Capacity: A single unit can process 2–40 tons per hour (t/h), depending on the specific model (e.g., 5LL-1200, BLL-Φ600, etc.).

  • Process Configuration: Multiple units are often used in series (multi-stage circuits) to achieve a comprehensive recovery flow of roughing → scavenging → cleaning.

  • Eco-friendly & Energy Saving: Features no moving parts and requires no power drive; characterized by low water consumption and minimal operating costs.
