Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: The compressor makes a "ticking" noise like a diesel engine at idle - is that normal?
No. A healthy W164 compressor produces a continuous low humming sound. A rhythmic ticking noise usually indicates a broken piston ring or loose valve plate inside the pump. This will quickly lead to insufficient pressure and may damage the valve block. We recommend stopping use immediately and replacing the compressor assembly.
Q2: The vehicle does not rise after cold start in the morning, but slowly comes up after driving a while. Is it the compressor?
Most likely yes - aged piston seals. On the W164, seals shrink in low temperatures, causing initial leakage. Once warm, the rubber softens and sealing recovers. This is a classic early failure sign. If ignored, the compressor will completely fail within 2-3 weeks. Solution: replace with an improved seal repair kit or the entire compressor.
Q3: The compressor works fine, but the vehicle suddenly drops to the lowest height occasionally. Why?
The compressor is usually not the main cause. Sudden drops on the W164 are often due to a stuck valve spool inside the valve block or drifting height sensor signals. Test: after the vehicle drops, if the compressor starts immediately and re-raises the car, then the compressor is fine - the issue is in the control system or valve block. If the compressor does not start, the relay or internal pressure switch may be faulty.
