Transferrin (TF) is the primary iron-binding protein in blood plasma, responsible for iron transport and metabolism, while also regulating cellular respiration, cell proliferation and immune function. With natural antioxidant and bactericidal properties, recombinant apo-transferrin is a critical supplement widely used in serum-free and low-serum cell culture systems.
Transferrin naturally occurs in three forms: apo-transferrin (iron-free, no bound iron ions), holo-transferrin (fully iron-saturated, binding two iron ions per molecule) and partially saturated transferrin. The apo form is the preferred choice for iron-rich culture media, enabling precise control of iron availability in cell culture workflows.
