Traditional heat exchangers typically feature channel diameters ranging from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters, where fluid tends to form laminar flow (smooth flow with heat transfer occurring only through molecular diffusion, resulting in lower efficiency). In contrast, microchannels have equivalent diameters of only 10 to 1000 micrometers (approximately 1/5 to 1 times the diameter of a human hair). The fluid flow rate within these channels is significantly higher (typically 0.5 to 5 m/s), and the "boundary layer" thickness (the thin layer with the greatest temperature gradient in the fluid) on the channel wall is substantially compressed (only a few micrometers to tens of micrometers). This configuration promotes turbulent flow (where fluid is violently disturbed, enabling rapid heat transfer through fluid mixing). Consequently, microchannels achieve convective heat transfer coefficients of 500-5000 W/(m²*K), representing a 2-20 times improvement over traditional finned tube heat exchangers (100-300 W/(m²*K)).
